The Algebra of Silence

What is Zero?

In standard arithmetic, Zero is nothing. It is the void. But in Abstract Algebra, Zero (\(\mathbf{0}\)) is simply the Annihilator. It is the element that, when multiplied, destroys information.

  • In the Tropical Semiring (Shortest Path), \(\mathbf{0}\) is \(\infty\). Silence is infinite distance.
  • In the Boolean Semiring (Logic), \(\mathbf{0}\) is False. Silence is impossibility.
  • In the Probability Semiring, \(\mathbf{0}\) is \(0.0\). Silence is impossibility.
  • In the Convex Hull Semiring, \(\mathbf{0}\) is the Empty Set \(\emptyset\).

mappingtools is a library for manipulating Silence.

A sparse matrix is mostly Zero. When we implement dot product, we are explicitly not computing the Zeros. We are surfing the topology of the non-Zero.

This is why the Semiring abstraction is so powerful. It allows us to redefine what "Silence" means. We can change the universe from "Distance" to "Probability" to "Logic" just by swapping the definition of Zero.

We are not just building data structures. We are building Universes where the laws of physics (Addition and Multiplication) are interchangeable plugins.
