Abstract¶
The Grand Council Assessment (Feynman) found that 4 advanced modules fail the Freshman Test — their docstrings read like graduate textbook citations rather than developer guides. This proposal adds plain-English summaries, fixes documentation typos, and improves onboarding clarity.
Motivation¶
"If you can't explain it to a freshman, you don't understand it."
Core modules (matrix, lattice, probability, automata) pass the Freshman Test easily. However,
homology, clifford, galois, and category contain dense mathematical jargon without explaining
why a developer should care. Documentation typos (reciepes) and an overly abstract concepts.md
opening further increase friction for newcomers.
Specification¶
1. Freshman Summary Docstrings¶
Add plain-English module-level docstring preambles to 4 modules:
homology.py:
Topological Data Analysis — counts connected components (β₀) and multidimensional holes (β₁) in point clouds, meshes, and graph structures.
clifford.py:
3D & Spacetime Geometric Rotations — rotates vectors using multivector rotors without gimbal lock or 4×4 matrix conversions.
galois.py:
Fixed-size modular arithmetic over finite fields — essential for AES encryption, error-correcting codes, and cryptographic protocols.
category.py:
Pipeline composition with side-effects — chains functions over semirings using Kleisli matrix composition and Kan extensions.
2. Fix Documentation Typos¶
Correct all instances of reciepes to recipes in docs/recipes.md (broken GitHub links throughout
the file).
3. Improve docs/concepts.md Onboarding¶
Add an opening "Semiring Mental Model" section before formal mathematical definitions:
Think of a Semiring as an arithmetic engine where you swap out standard Addition (+) and Multiplication (×) for any custom rules — like (Min, +) for shortest paths, or (Max, ×) for link reliability. The same sparse matrix multiplication algorithm then solves completely different problems just by switching the semiring.
4. Enrich Advanced Module Function Docstrings¶
Add at minimum 1 code example per public function in clifford.py, galois.py, category.py,
and homology.py showing concrete input → output.
Falsifiable Invariants¶
- All links in
docs/recipes.mdresolve correctly (no broken paths). - Every module has a plain-English purpose statement in its docstring.
- Every public function in the 4 target modules has at least one docstring example.
docs/concepts.mdopens with an analogy before formal notation.
